The Museum of Human Kindness is an artistic attempt to re-invigorate social harmony, cohesion and mutual respect by drawing on stories of human kindness contributed by the public to create new works of art by participating artists. It is where intangible acts of kindness manifest into tangible works of art. The aim is to nurture conversations and reflections on why kindness as a virtue is well worth embracing. The Museum will take form as a series of pop-up exhibitions where stories and artworks (or “artefacts”) about human kindness will be on public display.
The ultimate aim of the Museum is to join the dialogue on restoring faith in humanity. The initiative comes at a critical juncture where we see a world increasingly destabilized by extreme views. Feelings of fear, aggression and distrust of “others” endanger our carefully crafted sense of social resilience and cohesion—hallmarks of civil societies. The Museum is a peaceful act of resistance to counteract corrosive actions. It offers a safe space for communities to come together and re-evaluate our social system.
The Museum, it should be made clear, is not a political act or a form of activism. Instead, it is an expression of will to explore who we are beyond the self and self-interests. The Museum, above all, is a place and an invitation to reflect on what makes mankind a kind human.
FAQs
What kind of kindness story can I share?
We’d love to hear stories of kindness you received from someone you barely know.
Can I share acts of kindness I have (or someone I know has) done for others?
We’re currently focusing our attention on you or someone you know receiving kindness from total strangers. We want to understand how small (or large) acts of kindness impacts the recipient.
That said, don’t stop being kind to others!
How do I share my kindness story?
Easy! Click on “Share a Story” and fill in the required fields. Don’t forget to mark the map of where the story took place.
How long will my kindness story take to show up on the website?
We run the museum after finishing our day-jobs, so it may take us a few days for your story to be checked, proofed and posted on the Museum website. We’ll let you know when the story’s gone live, so please use a contactable email address when you write to us.
We do have some basic ground rules for the stories.
We reserve the right not to publish stories which are deemed offensive or discriminatory on personal, sexual, racial, religious, national or ethnic grounds. We reserve the right to edit stories that contain full names or personal data, including third party or your own. Full names will be shortened to given names and personal data will be removed. We reserve the right to proof and copy edit the stories.
How else will my kindness story be shown?
Your story will also be shared at our physical exhibitions.
How should I write my story?
Your voice matters and we encourage you to be you. Be vivid.
That said, keep in mind the people who will be reading it. Most museum labels are roughly 100-150 words long for a good reason. Long texts are hard for readers to stay focused, so keep it simple. Short sentences in normal conversation voice work best. Think of it as a slightly longer tweet. Or writing someone a postcard.
It is our duty to protect individuals and their personal data. Your story should not contain full names or personal data of a third party of your own. Stories with offensive or discriminatory content of personal, sexual, racial, religious, national or ethnic nature will not be accepted.
